An Indo-Nepal event focused on private sector initiative in hydropower development in Nepal .

 
 


Cooperation in development of Nepal 's extensive hydropower development is recognized to be of obvious benefits to both Nepal and India . In this context, Independent Power Producers' Association of Nepal (IPPAN) and PTC India Limited had came together to jointly host the event `Power Summit 2006' in Kathmandu on 7 th and 8th September, 2006 . The events' focus was on kick-starting a private sector initiative for hydropower development in Nepal .

The two day event brought together relevant stakeholders from Nepal and India for focused discussions on the subject. Key dignitaries from the Nepal Government and Industry Associations had attended the event. While the format of the event is that of a 2-day, 8 sessions' seminar to be hosted at the Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Kathmandu, one-on-one meetings at the venuehad been provided for during the course of the two days.

The specific outcomes expected from the event were;

•  Identification and presentation of projects that are ready for development and others that are in the pre-development stage.
•  Identifying models for financing of the projects and likely issues in financing.
•  Identification of significant risks perceptions of investors with a view to provide specific recommendations to policy makers in both countries.

The participants were from the following business entities:

•  Existing licensees / developers from Nepal and Power project developers from India
•  EPC Contractors
•  Equipment manufacturers
•  Financial Institutions, including the Nepal Rashtriya Bank
•  Insurance Companies 

With participation by business entities from various segments, it was expected that the event would give an opportunity for start-up of dialogue between developers and financiers for specific projects.

The tentative list of invitee organizations from Nepal were:

Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Finance, Department of Electricity Development and Nepal Electricity Authority.

  • Nepalese Project Developers including IPPAN members.
  • Financial Institutions (Nepal Rastra Bank, Commercial Banks of Nepal, ADB, World Bank)
  • Representations from different business associations. ( FNCCI , CNI, NCC, NICCI etc.)
  • Insurance Companies

The tentative list of invitee organizations from India were:

Project Developers (Jaiprakash Associates, GMR Energy, Tata Power, Reliance Energy, LANCO, CLP Power India, Everest Power Pvt. Ltd., Him Urja Pvt. Ltd, NHPC, NTPC, Navbharat Ferro Alloys, Essar Power, Torrent Group, Meenakshi Power)

  • EPC Contractors (ABB, L&T, Marubeni)
  • Equipment Manufacturers (BHEL, GE Power Systems, Alstom Systems, Voith-Siemens)
  • Financial Institutions (ADB, IFC, ICICI Bank, Standard Chartered, Citigroup, SBI, IDFC, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, PNB, HDFC, PFC and REC)
  • Insurance Companies (Tata AIG, GIC, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz and AON)
